What we are learning about now

The first two weeks of school will be based on our Tribes Social Competency Unit where students will be involved in lots of activities to assist them to settle into their new grade and develop friendships and working skills. Assessment tasks have also been planned to enable teachers to form a thorough understanding of your child’s current ability in key curriculum areas.

Our Integrated Unit in Term 1 is ‘Discovering Our Local Community’ and is based on the following topics:
• What can we do to preserve the environment in our local area?
• How do we communicate with others in our local community?
• Who are the important people in our local community?
• How has our local community changed over time?
• What services are available in our local community?

In Literacy, we are focusing on developing students’ ability to plan and write interesting narrative texts, while expanding students’ ability to use effective spelling strategies, and correct grammar and punctuation.

In Maths for Term 1 we are focusing primarily on strengthening students’ understanding of place value. We will also be working on reading and interpreting timetables and calendars, and will spend time on fractions later in the term.
